How to choose a hearth
Choose the hearth after you know the fire or stove route, because the appliance affects the material, size and safety requirements. A hearth also changes the proportions of the whole fireplace, so it should be planned with the surround, opening and room rather than treated as a separate slab.
Start with the fire or stove
The hearth choice should follow the fire type. An electric fire in a decorative surround has different needs from a gas fire, and a stove needs more careful planning again. Heat, clearances, opening size and how the appliance is fitted all affect the hearth.
We keep this plain in the showroom. Choose the kind of fire or stove first, or at least narrow the route, then plan the hearth and surround around it. If you are not sure whether gas, electric or a stove suits the room, start with the gas or electric guide and the stove range.
Raised, low or flush-feeling hearths
A raised hearth gives the fireplace more weight. It can suit traditional marble surrounds, older rooms and stove openings where you want the fire area to feel clearly defined. It also changes how the fireplace sits with skirting, flooring and furniture.
A lower hearth can feel cleaner and quieter. It may suit a modern surround, an electric fire or a room where you do not want the fireplace to project too strongly. The practical detail still comes first: the chosen fire or stove must be installed correctly, and we do not treat style as a reason to ignore safety requirements.
Material and matching
A hearth can match the surround exactly, or it can be chosen to sit with the floor, fireplace opening and room. Matching gives a more complete fireplace feel. A quieter hearth can work when the surround already has a strong pattern. A darker hearth can visually ground a stove.
Marble, limestone, quartz, porcelain and other stone finishes all behave differently. Some are chosen for natural movement, some for consistency, and some for a cleaner practical surface. Samples matter because the hearth is horizontal. It catches light differently from the upright parts of the surround.
The floor matters as well. Timber, carpet, tile and stone all change how the hearth edge reads in the room. Bring flooring photos or samples if you have them.
This helps the hearth feel connected to the room, not just attached to the fireplace.
Safety distances in plain language
Fires and stoves have rules about heat, clearances and what sits around them. Those details depend on the appliance, the room and the installation route. We will not give a made-up distance here, because the wrong number would be worse than no number. The principle is simple: the hearth must suit the fire and be confirmed before the stone is made.
