How long does a fireplace installation take?

The fitting itself is often a day or so. The full journey from design to a fitted made-to-measure fireplace usually runs a few weeks. Here is the honest timeline.

A made-to-measure marble fireplace being fitted in a Birmingham home

The fitting itself is often a day or so. But the full journey, from your first design consultation to a finished fireplace on the wall, usually runs a few weeks. That is because every piece is made to measure: we design it, measure it, make it in our workshop, then fit it.

So there are two answers, and both are true. The fitting day is short. The making takes longer, and that is exactly what you are paying for. Below we set out the honest timeline and what can add to it.

How long does the fitting itself take?

For most fireplaces, the physical fitting takes around a day. Our team arrives, prepares the wall and hearth area, sets the surround, fits the fire and finishes the details. A straightforward marble or limestone surround with an electric fire is often done within a single visit.

Some projects take a little longer on site. If we are building a stove chamber, fitting a beam, or working around existing brickwork, the on-site work can stretch to a second day. It depends on the design and the condition of the room.

The point is that the fitting is the short part. By the time we arrive, the fireplace has already been designed and made to your exact measurements, so the day itself is calm and precise rather than rushed.

Why does the whole process take a few weeks?

Because the fireplace does not exist yet when you order it. This is not a boxed product pulled off a shelf. It is cut and finished for your room, to your measurements, in our own workshop. That making time is where the weeks go.

The journey runs in clear stages. First a design consultation, where we discuss the look, the material and the fire. Then a precise measure of your space. Then we make the piece in the workshop. Then we book the fit. Each stage has to follow the last, and good work cannot be rushed.

You can see the full sequence on our how we work page. A few weeks is a fair guide for most projects, though bespoke designs can run longer, which we explain below.

What are the stages from consultation to fitted fireplace?

It helps to see the whole path laid out. Here is how a typical project runs with us.

  • Design consultation. We talk through your room, your style and your choice of marble, limestone, quartz or porcelain, and the fire that suits you.
  • Measuring. We measure precisely so the finished piece fits properly. Our how to measure guide shows what this involves.
  • Making. We cut and finish the stone in our workshop. This is the main part of the timeline.
  • Fitting. We fit the surround, hearth, chamber and fire, usually in a day.

Each stage protects the next. Careful measuring means a clean fit. Careful making means the piece arrives right first time. Skipping steps to save days tends to cost more time later, so we do not do it.

What can add time to the timeline?

A few things extend the schedule, and it is fair to know them upfront. Bespoke stone is the main one. If your design uses a particular marble or a special finish, sourcing and preparing that slab takes longer than a standard material. The more custom the piece, the more workshop time it needs.

Extra construction adds time too. A stove chamber, a structural beam, or alterations to the wall all mean more work before and during the fit. These are worth doing well, and doing them well takes a little longer.

Gas fires add a specific requirement. A gas fire must be fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and that work has to be scheduled alongside ours. It is not a delay so much as a necessary step, and we coordinate it as part of the project. You can read more on our gas fires page.

Can a fireplace be installed faster?

Sometimes, yes, but within limits. If you choose a design and material we can prepare quickly, and your room needs little preparation, the timeline shortens. A simpler project naturally moves faster than a fully bespoke one.

What we will not do is rush the making or the measuring to hit an artificial date. A fireplace is a permanent part of your home. Getting the fit and finish right matters far more than saving a few days, and a piece made in a hurry rarely looks its best.

If you have a deadline, tell us at the design consultation. We are honest about what is realistic, and we would rather set the right expectation early than disappoint you later. Serving Birmingham and the West Midlands, we plan each project around the work it actually needs.

FAQ

How long from ordering to a fitted fireplace?

For most projects, a few weeks from design consultation to fitting. The exact time depends on the material, the design and whether a chamber or gas fire is involved. We give you a realistic timeline once we understand your project.

Is the fireplace fitting really just one day?

Often, yes. A standard surround with an electric fire is usually fitted in a day. More involved work, such as a stove chamber or a structural beam, can take a second day. We tell you which applies to your project.

Do gas fires take longer to install?

They add a step rather than a long delay. A gas fire must be fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we coordinate that alongside our own work. It is a requirement for safety, and we build it into the schedule.

Why can’t I buy a fireplace off the shelf and fit it quickly?

You can buy standard products, but they rarely fit a room perfectly. Our fireplaces are made to measure in our workshop, cut for your exact space. That making time is what gives you a piece that fits and finishes properly.

Does bespoke stone take much longer?

It takes longer than a standard material, yes. Sourcing and preparing a particular marble or finish adds workshop time. The result is a one-off piece made for your room, and for many people that is worth the extra wait.

How soon can you start?

It depends on our current workshop schedule and your design. The best way to find out is to book a design consultation, where we can talk through timings for your specific project and give you an honest date.
