An electric fire needs no flue at all. It plugs in, so it can go almost anywhere, and it gives a convincing flame effect with adjustable settings. The heat is lower and gentler, which suits some rooms perfectly well.

Neither is the right answer for everyone. It depends on your room and how you want to use the fire.

Which gives more heat?

How is the surround made to suit either?

The surround is made to measure around your chosen fire. Whether you go gas or electric, we cut and finish the stone in our workshop to fit the fire, the opening and the room.

This is where the made-to-measure approach matters. A gas fire and an electric fire have different requirements for the opening, the hearth and any chamber behind. We build the fireplace around your fire and your room, in the stone and finish you choose, rather than making you fit a fire into a fixed surround.

For a media wall, that means designing the stonework so the fire and screen sit together cleanly. For a traditional gas fire, it means the right opening, hearth and chamber for the fire you have chosen. Either way, the stone is made for your fireplace, not off a shelf.

How do you choose?

Start with two questions: do you want real flame and strong heat, and does your home have or allow a flue? If yes to both, gas is a natural fit. If you want flexible siting or a media wall, electric is likely the one.
